A growing aerospace subcontractor needed additional measurement capacity to support new contracts but faced budget constraints that made purchasing new equipment challenging. They required proven reliability and full certification for AS9100 compliance.

The Challenge The client’s existing single CMM was becoming a bottleneck as order volumes increased. New aerospace contracts required expanded measurement capabilities including larger component capacity and enhanced software functionality. However, budget limitations meant new equipment costing £180,000+ was not feasible without significant financial strain.

Time was critical as new contracts included penalty clauses for delivery delays. The client needed a solution that could be operational quickly without compromising on accuracy or certification requirements. They also required confidence that any pre-owned equipment would deliver reliable performance comparable to new machines.

Previous experiences with second-hand equipment had been disappointing, with hidden problems emerging after purchase and inadequate documentation for aerospace compliance. The client needed assurance that any investment would support their quality certification and provide long-term value.

Our Solution CHE Metrology identified a suitable Mitutoyo CMM from our carefully curated inventory of pre-owned equipment. The machine had been operated in a controlled environment by a pharmaceutical company and showed minimal wear despite its age. We conducted comprehensive refurbishment including mechanical overhaul, controller upgrade, and complete calibration.

Our refurbishment process included replacing all wear items, updating to current software versions, and conducting extensive testing across the full measurement volume. We provided complete documentation including full calibration certificates, maintenance records, and compliance certification suitable for AS9100 requirements.

The installation was project-managed to minimise disruption, with our technicians providing comprehensive training and measurement program development. We offered a full 12-month warranty and ongoing support services, giving the client confidence in their investment.

The Results The refurbished CMM was operational within three weeks of order, allowing the client to meet critical delivery deadlines. Performance testing confirmed measurement capabilities exceeding their requirements, with uncertainties of ±0.002mm. The investment cost 65% less than equivalent new equipment whilst providing comparable functionality and accuracy.

Within six months, the additional capacity enabled the client to accept £400,000 of new contracts that would otherwise have been declined. The machine has operated reliably with minimal downtime, supporting successful AS9100 recertification. The client has since recommended CHE Metrology to other aerospace suppliers, leading to additional sales in the sector.

The proven reliability and comprehensive support have established a ongoing relationship, with CHE Metrology providing calibration services and technical support for both machines in the client’s facility.

We provide reliable, innovative, and simple solutions.
